The Japan Grand Prix was significantly affected by rain. The drivers headed to the pits shortly after the start to change to wet tyres and when the rain intensified, the race was stopped after twelve laps. After a few dozen minutes the drivers returned to the track, but due to the continued heavy rain the Grand Prix was definitively abandoned shortly afterwards. The order that was in place before the first interruption stood, and with half the race completed the drivers were awarded full points.
