De leider in het MotoGP-wereldkampioenschap is ernstig gewond geraakt tijdens de Grand Prix van Catalonië. Francesco Bagnaia kreeg in de eerste ronde een highsider en viel op de baan direct onder de wielen van de Zuid-Afrikaan Brad Binder, die over zijn benen reed. De race, die na een onderbreking werd hervat, werd gewonnen door de Spanjaard Aleix Espargaró. Hij pakte zijn tweede overwinning van het seizoen na zijn succes in Silverstone, voor teamgenoot en landgenoot Maverick Viñales. Het Aprilia-team vierde zijn eerste MotoGP-dubbel.
